English after norwegian;

Halloisen mine Jule Enhjrninger!

Pynt fint!

Hello my fellow Christmas Unicorns!

Guess what we did today? We together with the Cranney and zone leaders did go down to see the flamingos. Every year flamingos flying to Africa from the East and make a little pit stop in Larnaca a few weeks, if I understood it correctly. It was quite special for a Norwegian to see a whole herd of wild flamingos.

The last two Sundays, I have been asked if I could play the organ at sacrament meeting. Quite easy since the songs are already recorded in the piano, so I just have to pluck the beat and tempo as playing the piano by itself. But listen? !! this Sunday, I played a little manually! " Nearer my God to the." Really fun! There is a Keyboard in one of the other apartments that they do not use, that I can take over so that I can practice a bit. ^^

This week has been so good. Packed with lessons. So many different experiences. Miracles and new people we have taught.

We had a lesson with the girl from Bergen! Not that it was something new, but something very unexpected happened! She has never accepted to take the Book of Mormon before, since she did not want to lose focus on the Old Testament, but I felt anyway that we had to try once again. We met as usual, talked about who we are, about Israel, the gathering of the tribes of Israel, Moses, etc. Then we read Alma 32 together, which Alma compares the word (the Scriptures) with a seed and we read it in Norwegian. Just to read the writings of Norwegian for the first time in over a year was pretty special. She liked it, although a little skeptical of unknown writings and prophets. She had to agree with lots of what we read from Alma 32 and that there were lots of great insights and learning's.
Afterwards she talked about how the Bible comes from the Jews and she explained a little about the traditions, including a bit about Christmas. I concluded by saying that we have to go now, but we would wish she could read a chapter to the next time which says a lot about how the Bible comes from the Jews. She said "oh, where can I find this?" And she saw that I browsed in Book of Mormon. Then she said, "Okay, I suppose I'll read a little in this Book to Mormon :)". She took the Book of Mormon and promised that she would read the chapter that same evening. I was all so happy!

We also had eleven other lessons that all was interesting in their own way. Some we really needed to go into the doctrine so that they would follow us. Others we needed to teach as simple as possible, due to language, culture or both.

A lesson with Gabbi, from India was somewhat disappointing. He comes every Sunday to church, read the Book of Mormon, prays and do everything we challenge him to do. But in this lesson we learned that he understands little of what we teach. He has a great desire to follow Christ and to do well, but his English is not enough good not to understand what he needs .... An entire lesson teaching him what a prophet is. Afterwards we asked him if he could explain what a prophet is in his own words, and he answered something entirely differently. We have to figure out another way to teach him. :)

An Egyptian, Imed, we taught several times this week was very interested in that we have a prophet today, and is also eager to reading the Book of Mormon. He came to church on Sunday as well. He has a Christian background, so he easily understands what we teach, and he understands quickly when there is something that only our church has to offer. On Saturday we showed him the church and talked a lot with him. We watched a video of President Thomas S. Monson translated into Arabic. Before he left he told us that he has a problem with smoking, and that he wants to quit, and that he thinks he can do it! The funny thing is that we never mentioned anything about the word of wisdom at all. No doubt that this guy is prepared!

It is wonderful to see that it is not only we who are getting ready for Christmas here. Christmas lights everywhere and people decorate their homes and houses. We play some Sufjan Stevens music. He always invites Christmas mood in seconds.

Have a great week you guys! Put up the decorations  and get into the Christmas spirit!
